The Eternal Fire

History & Spiritual Significance

Tiruvannamalai is one of the most ancient and holy sites in India. It represents the Agni (Fire) element among the five primordial elements (Pancha Bhoota Stalams) of Lord Shiva.

The word 'Arunachala' is derived from 'Aruna' (red/fire) and 'Achala' (hill). According to legend, Lord Shiva once appeared here as a column of fire that had no beginning or end, to quell the ego of Brahma and Vishnu.
